I have mentioned so many times that my grandmother is already showing signs of dementia. All her children talked about her current condition and have come to an agreement to find a nursing home for her, the best that they could find within Florida area.
Although my mom is very much willing to take care of her, having her in her home may entail great responsibilities as well as proper training and education. Elderly care is the fulfillment of the special needs and requirements that are unique to senior citizens. So far my mom do not have that capabilities and she is afraid that if she won't be able to provide the right kind of attention my grandma needs it might put her in harms way.
So now my aunts, uncles and cousins are going over different nursing home services, consulted with geriatric experts to know to which specific facility and care my grandma needs given her current mental condition.
For us Filipinos putting elder people inside nursing homes and other assisted living facility is not that acceptable. It is part of our upbringing and culture that children and grandchildren are the ones taking care of the elders. So if only I had to decide I would not want to put Grandma in any of those facilities but I know how life is in the US. I just hope that the people who will be taking care of her will treat her right and will not in any way abuse her.
